Committees/Lay Leadership/Elected Officers (As listed in By-laws, Article IV)
Committees The Parish Committee has seven members, elected by the Parish for staggered terms of three years, and is the executive body of the Parish. It annually elects a Chairperson, a Vice Chairperson and a Clerk who serves at its pleasure. The Minister is a member ex-officio, without a vote. It is responsible for the general supervision of the affairs of the Parish between meetings of the Parish. Chair: Mary Parker(781-383-9152, msparker@comcast.net) The Council on Parish Ministry, comprised of committee chairs and two at-large, elected members, establishes the Parish Calendar, coordinates all committee activities, and plans and implements Parish-wide programs, to aid the ministry of First Parish. The Minister, the Moderator, and a member of the Parish Committee are ex-officio members. Chair: Pokey Kornet (781-383-6576, dkornet@comcast.net). The Music and Worship Committee consists of seven members and, ex officio, the Minister and Music Director. The Committee's mission includes seeking and responding to the congregational sentiments regarding worship experience and music programs; encouraging lay participation in worship services; and supporting other ways to achieve the mission through worship programs and worship-related music activities.Chair: Eric Kluz (781-545-6745, ekluz@htkarchitects.com) The Membership Committee’s mission is to develop and serve our Parish community's promise of mutual trust and support; to provide a welcoming, positive experience for members, friends, and visitors; to promote membership growth through greater awareness of First Parish and of UU principles; and to increase awareness of complementary programs and services in neighboring UU congregations. Chair Woody Chittick (781-383-9220, wchittick@comcast.net). The Religious Education Committee: The Children's Religious Education Committee is made up of six members. Meetings are held on the first and third Wednesdays of every month. The minister and the director of religious education are both present at these meetings. Meetings are held to create the calendar for the church school year, to select curricula for all grades, to schedule recruitment, and to address the content of children's worship services which are held the first Sunday of each month in the parish house. All special events and one room school house activities are also determined by this committee. Chair Carol Martin ((781-383-6577, DrJandMrsG@aol.com) The Adult Religious Education Committee: This committee, newly formed this year, consists of four members of the parish. The committee meets on the first Wednesday of each month. The minister and the director of religious education are both present at these meetings. Its focus is on the scheduling of both day and evening classes, workshops, book discussions, and film as theological text, which are open to all adult members of the parish. The Shared Ministry Committee: This committee, called for in the Agreement beween Jan and First Parish, advises the minister on the effectiveness of her ministry, and on concerns of members about the ministry. The covenanted purpose of the committee is "reflection and communication on the shared ministry of First Parish as it is realized through the congregation, the minister, and the relationship between the two. Chair Jack Martin (781-383-6577, DrJandMrsG@aol.com) The Outreach Committee: This committee is currently functioning as a social services organization, with a focus on support for local, national, and international charitable organizations in need of monetary assistance. The goal is to move toward a Congregation-directed program with full support from the Minister and governing bodies. Chair Bev Burgess (781-545-0352, bevburgess@aol.com). The Publicity Committee: publicizes First Parish activities in local media, using texts supplied by the organizing church group (see form in the Publicity webpage) Chair: Max Pounder (781-545-0541, sine.max@verizon.net), Coordinator Dee Lehner (781-545-7785, dtaleh@comcast.net) The Property Committee: Oversees the use, care, and maintenance of the church properties -- Meeting House, Parish House, and the Parish House grounds. The committee is organized with members responsible for landscape, maintenance, recycling, kitchen, and other relevant functions. It includes staff representatives for religious education, nursery school, and grounds. Chair: Nancy Sandell ((781-383-0486, nancysandell@comcast.net). The Nominating Committee: Four members with 2-year terms selected by the Parish Committee and approved at the annual meeting. Nominates members of Parish Committee, Moderator, Investment Custodian, at-large members of Council on Parish Ministry, and replacement of members of Nominating Committee. Members Jody Doyle, Chair: Mark Dunne, Chartis Tebbetts, Abigail Alves. The Care Circle Committee includes all members of the First Parish Family. Assisted by the co-chairs, 12 monthly volunteers coordinate the effort. The Care Circle offers help and support to fellow parishioners in the event of an illness, accident, or death in the family. Volunteers visit, deliver hot meals, and offer child care or rides to help out through difficult times. Chair: JoAnne Chittick (781-383-9220, jochittick@hotmail.com) The Stewardship Committee has3 members. It plans and carries out the annual Parish Stewardship campaign and maintains giving histories and records of Parish members. Members: Jim Shumaker, Chartis Tebbetts and Ron Wallace. The Financial Planning Committee: Advises the Parish regarding the long-range financial needs of the Parish. The Investment Committee: Oversees the management of the invested endowment of the Parish. Chair: Will Cowen (781-749-3364, wcowen@longriverventures.com) The Carriage House Nursery School Board provides oversight in the form of an advisory committee to the private, non-profit, non-religious school designed to meet the needs of young children from 15 months to 5 years of age, that meets in the First Parish Parish House. The school's mission is to provide the 70 children (enrolled in three preschool classes and one toddler class) an innovative environment for learning and growth.
